What Is llms.txt?
llms.txt is an emerging convention intended to provide machine-readable guidance or curated site information for AI-oriented consumers. It is not a search ranking guarantee and support across AI systems can vary.
SETN treats llms.txt as one part of a broader AI discoverability strategy rather than a replacement for structured data, content quality, or technical SEO.
SETN llms.txt Setup
When SETN owns llms.txt functionality, configure the available llms.txt settings in the plugin and use the displayed URL to test the result.
Confirm that important public content is represented appropriately and that no private, staging, or sensitive information is included.
Provider Ownership
If another supported provider such as Yoast, Rank Math, or All in One SEO owns llms.txt, SETN can defer rather than generating a competing file.
Review the provider status shown by SETN to determine which system currently owns the endpoint.
Compatible vs. Standalone Mode
In Compatible Mode, SETN respects another supported provider’s ownership of llms.txt. In Standalone Mode, SETN can provide the functionality itself when no other supported provider owns it.
After changing providers, refresh compatibility status and clear caches before testing again.
Testing Your llms.txt URL
- Open the exact llms.txt URL shown by SETN or your active provider.
- Confirm the response is publicly accessible and returns expected content.
- Test in a private browser window.
- Clear server/CDN caches if the response is stale.
Do not assume that a root-level /llms.txt URL is the only valid route in every WordPress environment.
Fallback URL & Troubleshooting
If /llms.txt returns a 404, test the fallback URL displayed by SETN if available.
If the fallback works but the root URL does not, refresh WordPress permalinks, clear caches, and review host or security rules that may block virtual root-level files.
A 404 on llms.txt does not mean your JSON-LD or Knowledge Graph is broken.
